As year-end mashups of pop music hit the media, you may have heard Daniel Kim’s mix “Pop Danthology 2012.” However, have you read “The Making of Pop Danthology”? Kim’s blog post about his own amazing creative effort serves as an interesting metaphor for “the making of” a family.
In his look behind-the-scenes, Kim reveals how he dedicated 500 hours of work over a three-month period to gather (Month 1), plan (Month 2), and arrange and mix (Month 3) more than 50 songs (based on key and tempo) into an eight-minute musical puzzle.
Here is the family version:
- Gather: The bringing together of the morals, values, beliefs, memories, and traditions that we choose to lay the foundation for the family we are creating.
- Plan: The intention, compromise, definition of roles, division of labor, economics, lifestyle choices, priorities, and imagination that illuminate the vision for our family.
- Arrange and Mix: The complex {perhaps magical} ways we balance the needs of each individual and continue to grow together at the same tempo and live in the same key.
The many roles that a parent juggles can be overwhelming. How many of us wish for an extra hour in the day? Wonder how we can create more balance and harmony? Hope that we are creating an exceptional finished product?
