Day 9: Be Grateful
In the days after catastrophe, such as hurricane Sandy, clarity becomes a great gift. During these somber moments, we might find it easier to connect with a sense of gratitude. However, as the holidays near and in all the days that follow, continue to reflect upon the many reasons to be grateful for the most important things.
The phrase “be grateful” may at first sound like a trite recommendation, but daily life so easily distracts our awareness and practice of gratitude. Ceaseless gratitude is a lifelong journey.
A personal gratitude journal can be a helpful tool when visualizing and expressing thankfulness. While social media tempts us to over-share every thought and activity online, journaling is an exercise for you alone. The physical act of writing down reflections can bring clarity and other rewards.
Inspirational quotes can be helpful writing prompts for journaling. Here are a few that express both the simplicity and complexity of gratitude:
“Joy is the simplest form of gratitude.” ~ Karl Barth
“Thankfulness is the beginning of gratitude. Gratitude is the completion of thankfulness. Thankfulness may consist merely of words. Gratitude is shown in acts.” ~ Henri Frederic Amiel
“Gratitude is one of the least articulate of the emotions, especially when it is deep.” ~ Felix Frankfurter
